PREVIEW: Round 23 v East Perth

Subiaco round out their 2017 campaign with a Leederville battle against East Perth on Saturday.

The Lions have built up a wealth of momentum over the back half of the season and will be motivated to put East Perth out of the finals equation. The Royals season hangs on the line and they need a win on Saturday to qualify for the post-season.

Subiaco will be the odds on favourites after dismantling finals hopefuls West Perth last week by 82-points. Subi led at every change to stream away with one of their biggest wins of the season.

On the other side of the spectrum, East Perth dropped a heartbreaker against Perth despite leading by three goals halfway through the last quarter. The devastating loss means the Royals must win this weekend to qualify.

Subi’s mentality will remain much the same and it could provide an opportunity to re-introduce captain Kyal Horsley to the fray. Horsley has been working back from an injury suffered in Round 19.
In form midfielder Adam Cockie believes his Lions side will be focused on finishing the season with a bang.
"You want to run out the season with the same intensity as always. If you get complacent you might let tendencies come in. We'll be focused on winning this week and using that momentum." said Cockie
Subiaco's inside spearhead also said the Lions will be looking to get an upper hand on the talented Royals midfield.
"You've got to watch the players like Pat McGinnity who can also sneak forward for a goal. They also have elite outside ball winners in the likes of Masten, Wright and Wellingham so we will have to be cautious of their ability. If we get first hands, we can control the game and play on our terms." added Cockie

Subiaco have managed their list well to have their best 22 raring to go for September. With the impending return of Horsley the only players who remain missing from the mix would be Chris Phelan, Clancy Wheeler and possibly Liam Baker.

Patrick McGinnity has been a massive performer for East Perth in 2017 and re-instated his importance with a 27 disposal, three goal game against Perth. He is the most dangerous weapon that the Royals possess and will need close attention to nullify his influence.

This week provides an interesting dilemma for Subiaco and their coaching staff. With the minor premiership sealed and a home semi secured the Lions could use Round 23 to rest some of their weary soldiers. They will have decide on a balance between building form or resting players.

1. Subiaco could equal a historic 19 wins in a row.
2. Lions forward Liam Ryan could clinch the Bernie Naylor Medal for the WAFL’s leading goal-kicker.
3. The Lions could eliminate Leederville rivals East Perth out of the finals race.

Subiaco were comprehensive winners against the Royals last time they met running out 32 point winners. Subi forward Liam Ryan kicked four to help the Maroons to their 11th win of the season.
