PREVIEW: Round Four (2017) vs Peel Thunder
Wednesday, 05 April 2017
Subiaco and Peel clash for a Grand Final Rematch in Round Four at Medibank Stadium.
The Thunder secured their debut WAFL premiership over Subiaco in the 2016 Grand Final but the Lions will undoubtedly be hungry for revenge.
Subi (5th) have started the season 2-1 with their most convincing win coming against a talented West Perth side last week. They will be looking to make another statement against the Docker-aligned Thunder.
Peel (3rd) started the season with a narrow win against East Perth and a comprehensive beat-down of East Fremantle. They were humbled against South Fremantle last week and the Fremantle Dockers’ desire to harvest youth early in the season will cause an instability amongst the Thunder’s starting 22. As history as shown this can prove as a positive or a negative for the Mandurah based side.
Ben Sokol was a big addition for the Lions last week and his five goals came from a well balanced forward line. Sokol offers another key target and frees up Subi leading goal-kicker Liam Ryan to read the contest. The additions of Dylan Nelson and Brad Stevenson also added size and experience against the Falcons.
Peel’s best performers against the Bulldogs were Sam Collins, Harley Balic and Matt Taberner. All three are possible inclusions for Fremantle against the Western Bulldogs. 2016 first round draft pick Griffin Logue is also expected to get a call up, which could instantly weaken Peel. The trade-off between Fremantle’s unwanted experienced players and young potential will define the Thunder side this week.
HITTING THEIR STRIDE
The Lions looked a little bit shaky in their first couple of outings but looked confident against West Perth in Round Three. Subi stuck to the game plan and manufactured wave after wave of aggressive, free-flowing football. Head coach Jarrad Schofield’s desire to move the ball faster in the pre-season appears to settling with the players and it was on show against the Falcons.
THE SHARPEST WILL WIN
Two of the WAFL’s sharpest shooters will face off at Leederville Oval on Saturday with Subi’s Liam Ryan and Peel’s Leroy Jetta looking for a big influence. Ryan is the league’s leading goal-kicker on 11 and Jetta is 2nd with nine. Ryan only kicked two against the Falcons but had a massive impact in the forward line in regards to scoring chances created. Jetta had a very tough day against the Bulldogs, collecting a deflating 4 disposals, 0 goals.
