PREVIEW: Round 3 (2017) @ West Perth
Wednesday, 29 March 2017
Subiaco will head North on Saturday to take on the West Perth Falcons at HBF Arena.
The historical rivals will write a new chapter early in the 2017 season in a game that promises to be fast and physical.
The Lions have started their season with a loss but rekindled some of their fiery best against the Perth Demons. Subi stormed home in the second half to record a 23-point win over Perth.
Liam Ryan kicked six goals and captain Kyal Horsley was named WAFL player of the round with 35 touches, five marks and two goals.
West Perth had the bye in the first round but got a very solid start against East Perth in Round Two. The sides battled hard before swift ball movement and classy finishing tipped the game in the Falcons favour for a 21-point win.
Falcons midfielder Shannon Nelson was big against the Royals with 34 touches and six inside 50’s. Big forward Michael Lourey managed three goals against East Perth.
In the last ten meetings against West Perth they have averaged just 67.9 points a game against Subiaco. The Lions will hope to keep the Falcons to a similar score during their visit to Joondalup on Saturday.
SLUGGISH STARTS TO GO
Subi have taken a while to warm up in both of their 2017 fixtures and will look to overcome their slow starts against the Falcons. The Lions have been dominant in third quarters but would hope to balance their scoring ability. The sluggish starts could also be a side effect from new personnel and an accelerated game style. These are factors that will be naturally improved over time.
LAST TIME THEY MET
The Falcons would have bad memories of the maroon and gold. West Perth visited Kingsway Reserve late in the season amidst a finals push and were comprehensively beaten by the Lions. Subi restricted the Falcons to 5.7 (37) in a big 52-point win in the Northern district.
HBF Arena is currently a major construction site as the new facilities for West Perth FC are built. Multiple road closures apply so please allow yourself extra time to gain entry. There is no entry from Moore Drive so all vehicles are to enter Kennedya Drive from Joondalup Drive.
Preview will be updated as the week goes on.
