SFC 2017: Pre-Season v Claremont

Subiaco have recorded consecutive wins in the pre-season with an eight point win over Claremont at Leederville Oval.

Kyal Horsley had a tremendous input with 28 touches and three goals out of the midfield. Horsley looks primed for a big season in 2017.

Joel Latham was busy off the back line with 26 touches, Leigh Kitchin collected 21 and Matt Bogensperger 18.

Young gun Liam Ryan kicked three goals to add to his eight against the Swans last week. Recruit Reid Polak also added another to his pre-season tally.

Damon Guiness took the lead ruck roll and was effective with 25 hit-outs against the more experienced Goddard. Delahunty was a big help in the middle as well; the versatile tall collected 15 hit-outs and 11 touches.

The Lions fielded a relatively similar side to the one that played against the Swans last week with Aaron Heal being the big inclusion for Subi.

Subiaco got out to a strong start in an early start at Leederville oval. The 9:30 bounce-down seemingly jumpstarted the Lions to a big first half. Subi’s midfield match-ups started to gain dominance from the outset, even though the Lions eventually lost the disposal count 368 - 392, they were easily the better users of the ball. Subi held a single goal lead at the first break.

The Lions expanded their lead in the second quarter thanks to some adept ball movement. Despite the temperature creeping past 30, the two sides continued to throw their bodies at the contest. Liam Ryan did most of his damage in the second to help Subiaco to a 19 point half-time lead.

The half-time break had an impact on the game and the coaches re-adjusted. Instead of a free-flowing, switch-filled game the focus shifted to contested football. Whether it was due to heat or strategical factors, play dramatically slowed in the third quarter. It worked to the Lions advantage with Claremont’s fleet footed midfielders Murphy, Neates and Davies negated for the most part. The Lions managed 0.3 to Claremont’s 1.0

The pre-season scorcher turned into a frantic game in the fourth. Subiaco kicked an early goal and the heat momentarily turned down. Claremont then generated a massive push as the legs got tired around the ground. Through transition and running, the Tigers were able to kick three straight goals to make it a one kick game. With the heat of the contest fully on, Chris Bryan pulled out a desperate smother. This turnover resulted in a game-winning play when Dylan Nelson marked strongly, swivelled and dropped a bomb into the out-stretched hands of Clancy Wheeler as he streamed into the goal-square. Game over, Lions by eight.
