SFC 2016: Round Three v West Perth

Subiaco have started the season flawlessly with a 44 point win over West Perth at HBF Arena.

The Falcons had a two goal lead in the third before the Lions took control of the game; kicking seven goals to one in the last quarter for a 44 point win.

Recruits Ben Sokol and Shaquille Mckenzie starred with seven goals between them and Brett Robinson had a massive day with 28 disposals and three goals.

Captain Kyal Horsley was dominant around stoppages with 27 disposals in a well oiled engine room starring Chris Phelan, Leigh Kitchin, Adam Cockie, Craig Hoskins & Brett Mahoney.

The Lions had 78 more possessions than the Falcons on the day and dominated the clearances despite West Perth’s Seva Mozhaev winning 57 hit-outs.

Subiaco got on the front foot first with a snap goal from Leigh Kitchin in the early moments. Fellow vice-captain Lachlan Delahunty had the Lions second moments later and Dylan Clarke kept the train rolling. West Perth managed to respond with two quick goals before Hamish Shepheard left the Lions up by 17 at the first break.

West Perth had the momentum in the second quarter but the Lions managed to hold their surge. The Falcons kicked the first two of the second before it descended into a defensive arm wrestle. Subiaco by a goal at the main break.

Subi started to feel the heat when West Perth kicked three quick goals to hold a 12 point lead early in the third. The Lions held their nerve though and slowly choked the Falcons out of the stoppage game and doubled their scoring chances. The Lions piled on five unanswered goals to hold a 25 point lead at the final break.

The Falcons were hungry for the first goal of the quarter and they got it through Keegan Knotte. That would be the last ounce of joy for the home team however; as Subiaco piled on 7.2 in a whitewashed last quarter. Subi by 44 points.

GAME CHANGERS

SHAQ ATTACK:
The late exclusion of Kyle Halligan meant that an opportunity arose for Subi recruit Shaquille Mckenzie. Mckenzie had worked his way in to form through the reserves and dazzled in his Lions debut. When the game was there to be won, Mckenzie kicked an opportunistic goal in a crucial part of the third. In the last quarter Shaq set up a goal and kicked two more to ice the Falcons. The NEAFL premiership player looks to be a handy addition.

EXTRACTION SQUAD:
Subiaco’s midfield was outstanding against the Falcons in the 44 point win. When the game was getting out of hand in the third quarter the Lions tightened up around the stoppages and took away West Perth’s free flowing ball movement. Captain Kyal Horsley held the group together and the return of Adam Cockie continues to be a profound one. Brett Robinson and Leigh Kitchin also had massive outings.

A BIG WIN FOR #20:
The Lions celebrated utility Clancy Wheeler’s 100th game with a solid hit-out against rivals West Perth. Wheeler has been a rock for the Lions since his debut in 2011 and celebrated with his team-mates after kicking a goal in the fourth.

THE GAME WAS WON WHEN:
Shaquille Mckenzie went on a rampage in the last quarter setting up one goal before kicking two himself.
