Ressies roll on

An inspired last quarter has lifted the reserves over a gritty Swan Districts outfit by two points in the Qualifying Final at Medibank Stadium.

Charlie Le Fanu kicked a goal with six minutes remaining to give Subiaco the lead for the first time since the first quarter. The Lions kicked four goals to two in a thrilling last stanza.
Reece Blechynden was a league above in the Qualifying Final with 29 disposals, seven inside 50’s six tackles and two goals. Blechynden’s recent form should put him in a position to play league finals this year.
James Garcia popped up with two handy goals late, including a brilliant tackle and conversion to break the scoring drought in the third quarter. Charlie Le Fanu kicked two last quarter goals as well; showing poise to kick the game-winner.

Matthew Bogensperger was busy in the midfield with 27 disposals, Le Fanu 21, Joel Ashman 20 and Luke Norriss 18.

The Lions were the classier side in the first quarter in a physical opening against the Swans. Blechynden kicked the Lions first before Joel Latham added a snap. Subi had a strong back line bolstered by league experienced players Declan Jackson, Scott Worthington and Aaron Heal and the Swans struggled to create opportunities. Subi led 2.2 14 to 1.4 10 at quarter time.

The momentum shifted in the second quarter as the Swans did damage with their run. Dylan Nelson proved a handful for the black and white and finished with 4.4; two of his goals came in the second. The Lions kept the contest close but trailed by a goal at half time.

Swan Districts threatened to blow Subi out in the third quarter as they extended the lead to three goals plus but a late surge from the Lions changed the game. In a frustrated quarter of limited opportunities, Subi forward James Garcia ran down a dawdling defender and converted the set shot to lift the Lions. Some quick play and a smooth snap from Dylan Clarke brought Subi within ten points at three quarter time.

A blockbuster last quarter went up a notch in intensity and the experienced Lions players managed to stand up when it counted. Subi kicked the first two goals of the last to steal a one point lead before a two goal rebuttal from the Swans. The Lions needed two goals in the last ten minutes and seasoned youngsters James Garcia and Charlie Le Fanu delivered. Subi’s reserves move to a 2nd Semi Final vs South Fremantle next weekend.

Reece Blechynden was undoubtedly the best player on the ground against the Swans as he racked up 29 touches in perfect conditions at Medibank Stadium. Blechynden has been building form and has a handy knack of scoring goals. His input around the ball and on the scoreboard was crucial on a difficult day for the forwards.
A host of players featured in the reserves Qualifying Final could come into Jarrad Schofield’s projections in the coming weeks. Defenders Declan Jackson, Scott Worthington and Aaron Heal worked well in the back-line and could be utilised in the 2nd Semi Final. Reece Blechynden was best on ground and Charlie Le Fanu provided the game winner. 2014 Premiership forward Rhys Waters also continues to work into form but will be looking to get amongst the goals.
Despite being behind in clearances and scoring shots Subiaco found a way to win against the Swans. The game was on the line in the last quarter an Subi’ s big game players stood up with experience. Subi lost the reserves Grand Final to West Perth last year and the players involved have grown from it.
The Lions reserves will now play South Fremantle in the 2nd Semi Final. The venue will be confirmed following the results and filtering after the league results. Both of Subi’s senior teams will play finals next week.
Subiaco scrapped the last five minutes out after Charlie Le Fanu put the Lions up by a point. Subi added a minor score before the time ran out; holding on for a gutsy two point win.
