Historic Defence

Subiaco have established a strong premiership defence on the back of a historic defensive effort in 2015.

The Lions smashed an 89-year-old record during the regular season to stand as the most dominant defensive side in the club’s history.

Subi’s back line only conceded 1102 points for the year at an average of 55.1 points a game. It’s six points less than the previous 1926 record of 61.27

Vice captain and veteran fullback Darren Rumble was humbled to be a part of history but was quick to share the credit.

“It’s a team effort that limits the amount of points the opposition can score against us. I would love to say it’s just the back six but it’s a solid team effort to be good defensively.” said Rumble

On the eve of his 9th finals series as a WAFL footballer the Lions legend emphasised delivering pressure as a unit.

“The pressure that the midfielders and forwards have put on has been outstanding and it impacts the quality of inside 50’s that teams are creating,

It’s all about putting on good pressure, when the mids and forwards are on it makes our job easier.” said Rumble

Experience in the form of Rumble and Wayde Twomey has proven crucial for the maturing Lions defensive group who share an average age of 21.8.

Leadership comes from the veterans and head coach Jarrad Schofield puts faith in players like Rumble to provide it.

“There’s definitely onus on the veterans to make sure the structures are right and guys are doing the right thing. If someone makes a mistake it’s important to get around them and make sure they don’t go into their shell and that’s the kind of presence Schoey wants us to have.” said Rumble

The Lions await Sunday’s Qualifying Final between West Perth and Peel Thunder to determine who they’ll face first in September but Rumble is confident Subi will match up against either side.

“It will be all depending on the match-ups. Schoey’s been moving the back line around depending on the opposition all year and it will be the same in the Semi Final. There’s no preference playing either side, the better side will get through and we will do our best to match up on them.” added Rumble
