Schoey ready for finals

Subiaco head coach Jarrad Schofield has attributed his sides' impressive title defence to a strong inner belief as the Lions hunt for back-to-back flags.

The Lions are poised for a Semi-Final berth after securing first place and Schofield believes his group has grown since the 2014 premiership.

“The boys understand our game-plan and expectations a lot better than they did 12 months ago,

“I think the playing group are more seasoned and have become mentally stronger in the tight contests. They’re more demanding of each other and themselves and they work hard for success.” said Schofield

Subi shocked East Perth in last years Grand Final to win by 16 points and despite losing over ten players including veterans Jason Bristow, Andrew Mcdougall and Shaun Hildebrandt; Schofield has curated a great balance into the Lions playing group in 2015.

“We’ve got guys like Darren Rumble, Wayde Twomey, Kyal Horsley and Chris Phelan which have proven they can lead from the front. They’ve all had premiership success and are well positioned to lead the younger players.”

“The experience that recruits Leigh Kitchin, Brett Robinson, Sam Menegola and Jordan Lockyer have added has also been valuable and their personal experience has added to the wealth of the group.”

“Having these players has allowed the development and growth of the younger contingent like Simon Moore, Kyle Halligan and Declan Jackson there’s a really good balance amongst the group and everyone’s working for each other. said Schofield

Subi half-back Wayde Twomey's experience will be valuable come September.

With a record of 16-3 and one game to go, Schofield has trust in the balance of leaders heading into September.

“In big games you look for your leaders to step up and guys have been able to do that this year,

“Twomey always has a knack for stepping up in big games and he’s proven that in finals and state games. Kitchin has shown that he can lift the side and Phelan has had a great year,

“The captains Horsley and Rumble always know when the time is right to lead by example and it’s really important,

“Back in 2013 we might have been reliant on a select few to provide leadership but now we’ve got a really strong pool of experience.” added Schofield

Subi have also been buoyed with a return to health with Schofield stating the squad is in the best shape it’s been since the start of the season.

“The injury list isn’t as long as it has been, there’s guys that are still carrying sore spots but the boys can sense finals are a week away and everyones looking to get their best foot forward,

It’s an exciting time at the club for selection for both reserves and league sides and the group is probably the healthiest it’s been since the start of the season.” said Schofield

The Lions have been hunted all year and Schofield re-iterated the need to stay focused heading into the most important month of the year.

“We’ve had a long season and we’ve been challenged every step of the way,

“Teams have tested themselves against us but I feel we’ve managed the season well and are nearing the top of our game,

“The biggest challenge for us will be within ourselves and how much we want it. People can make expectations but as long as we’re ticking the boxes internally and doing the right things at the right times i’m sure the boys will get the success they deserve" said Schofield
