Phelan's raising the ceiling

Chris Phelan had a breakout year in 2014 averaging 21.37 disposals and played a major part in Subiaco’s 12th premiership.

You could have excused Phelan for slowing down after a premiership campaign but the eight-year veteran has taken his game to another level in 2015.

The 186cm midfielder has become a standout player in Subiaco’s centre but remains focused on the team.

“I’ve had a decent year; I’ve had a little bit more freedom this season but it’s all about playing my role. If I shut down my opponent and manage to damage them going the other way then I’m happy.” said Phelan

A push into the centre of the ground by head coach Jarrad Schofield in 2013 has worked wonders for Phelan who continues to repay the faith shown in him.

“Schoey was the first coach to move me into the midfield permanently and showed the faith in me to fill the role. I had played as a key position player or a defender before so it was definitely a big change but something i’ve really enjoyed.” said Phelan

Phelan has become one of the leagues best midfielders since then and is currently ranked 12th in the WAFL averaging 24.4 disposals a game.

With the challenge of constant improvement nipping at Phelan’s heels he focused on his pre-season training heading into 2015.

“There was nothing I had to improve on specifically this year but fitness was always a focus,

“When I was playing back line I had a few injury setbacks and struggled to get a good run at it. Last year was the first time I was fit enough and my goal was to build on it heading into this season.” added Phelan

Phelan was best on ground in Subiaco’s narrow lost to Swan Districts last week and is adamant the team has to stay focused looking towards the final games of the season.
“It’s a really exciting time around the football club; finals football is in sight but were solely focused on the challenge at hand,

“The boys are ticking all the boxes and making sure we are taking each game at a time, as the moniker goes, the focus stays the same every week. We have to keep winning,

“It’s going to be a tough road, East Perth are starting to hit some form and West Perth have been dangerous. We have to get everyone on the park and get ready to fight for it." said Phelan
