Lions Buzz: Round 16
Monday, 13 July 2015
Subi stamped themselves as league front-runners whilst condemning East Perth to the bottom of the ladder in feisty Leederville Derby in NAIDOC Round.
The two Leederville based sides have developed an interesting rivalry in recent years, which continues to create classic encounters.
The Royals handed Subi their first loss of the season in Round Three but felt the brunt of a Lions team growing in confidence and stature on Saturday.
The reason for the contrasting results can be found in the midfield. When Subi went down by 60+ to the Royals they were convincingly beaten in clearances and contested possession. Flash-forward to Round 16 and the Lions midfield is at it’s strongest it’s been all year. The mids out-battled, out-hunted and out-competed their East Perth rivals and it was the telling factor in a five goal last quarter.
Sam Menegola has been a big addition to the Subi side and captain Kyal Horsley is nearing his best. If injuries can be avoided, Subiaco have the personnel to beat any other midfield group in the league.
Another factor in the 16-point win over the Royals was Subi’s ability to take their chances. Although the Lions recorded a modest 12.13 they converted at key moments. Kyle Halligan and Michael Wood nailed their chances when the team needed it and have become important players in the Subiaco’s forward dynamic.
A lot of praise also went to QBE Man of the Match Jordan Lockyer who dominated in the back-line. Lockyer has had a barnstorming season for the Lions despite losing veterans Darren Rumble and Wayde Twomey to injury along the way. With a host of young guns like Kennedy, Le Fanu, Heal and Jackson; Lockyer is thriving as an intercept defender.
Subi’s international recruit Rory Smith featured for the reserves on the weekend and received a bit of attention from the media. Smith made the move from Boston over the off-season to give football a go. Full feature story will be available this afternoon.
