50 for Mahoney

Subiaco will travel to Fremantle Oval to take on South Fremantle this Saturday in a bid to add further pressure to league leaders East Perth.

With a dominant win over Perth last week lifting Subiaco to second spot; only the Royals stand in the way for first position on the WAFL ladder.

Brett Mahoney is in line to play his 50th game for the Lions after moving over from Victoria in 2012. Mahoney has been a fantastic contributor for the Lions to average 17.5 touches a game for Subiaco as a versatile midfielder.

Subiaco have ex-Lions great Richard Ambrose to thank for Mahoney's services who was convinced by the premiership player to make the move after playing against each other.

“I was talking to ex- Subiaco player Richard Ambrose after we played each other in a game in Victoria and he was able to get me in contact with the club. Both Ambrose and Dave Clark were playing in the game and couldn’t speak high enough of the Subiaco football club .” said Mahoney

With a different environment came a different style of football with Mahoney relishing on the WAFL’s bigger grounds.

“The training demands were intensified but the main difference I noticed was the size of the grounds and the amount of running involved. I felt it suited me a lot more compared to the small muddy grounds of Victoria. I came out of the country leagues playing for Mansfield so the space was a welcome change."

Mahoney has been a league regular since arriving at the club and is excited to be in the finals mix for the first time as a Lion.

“I’ve had a great time at the club and this year both senior sides are playing well and the club is up and a bout. We’re all looking forward to being a part of finals football this year.”

Mahoney was thought to be in doubt for the Round 18 clash after a crude elbow from Perth captain Paul Bevan left the 24 year old unconscious in the fourth quarter. Club doctors have since cleared the midfielder to play his 50th game for the Subiaco Lions.

GAME CHANGERS

YARRAN FIRED UP
Shane Yarran blew Perth out of the water in Subiaco’s Round 18 match-up with 21 touches and six goals. The South Mandurah product has been a revelation for the Lions in 2014 adding an exciting element that the club have been seeking since the retirement of legend Allistair Pickett. The 26 year old has slotted 29 goals amongst one of the WAFL’s deadliest forward lines, which includes Matt Boland (42 goals), George Hampson (30 goals) and Rhys Waters (27 goals).

RE-FUEL THE TANK
Ruckman Frank Stockley is set to miss the Bulldogs clash with a hamstring strain. The injury occurred in the first quarter against Perth but should only rule out the big man for a maximum of two weeks. On a positive note, defensive role-player Aaron Heal is set to return to the league ranks after overcoming an achilles injury.

MIDFIELD MAGIC
It would appear that Subiaco have found the perfect chemistry in their midfield heading into the business end of the season. With Captain Kyal Horsley running rampant amongst a potent mix of veterans and young talent Subiaco are moving the ball magnificently. Chris Phelan has revived his WAFL career with a stellar 2014 and enigmatic youngster George Hampson continues to turn games. Younger players Bill Fetherstonhaugh and Joel Latham also add power and persistence for the Subiaco ball-winners.

ALL EYES ON SCHLOITHE
Despite 2014 unfolding as a disappointing season for South Fremantle the efforts of 21 year old Haiden Schloithe have been admirable. The 21-year-old midfielder has stamped his arrival as an elite midfielder in 2014 with an average of 25 touches a game. Subiaco will have to look for Schloithe finding space on the outside and utilising his dangerous kick.

Subiaco's league team for Saturday's clash with South Fremantle will be announced tomorrow morning via social media.
