Lions score big on QBE Day

The Subiaco Lions have blown Perth out of the water with their biggest score since 2010 to record a 27.9 171 to 15.8 98 win to celebrate their 30th year with QBE.

Subiaco’s forwards were roaring with Shane Yarran booting six, Rhys Waters five and the returning Matt Boland with four.

Big man Andrew Mcdougall was also influential with 25 touches, 17 hit-outs and three goals in a best on ground performance.

Subiaco’s 11th win of the season sees them move up to second on the ladder but it wasn’t all easy pickings for the home side.

Perth found a pocket of resistance in the third quarter to kick five unanswered goals to swing the momentum.  The Lions responded fantastically in the last quarter to stamp their presence as premiership contenders to pile on ten goals.

Although the win comes as a massive boost for the Lions an injury to key ruckman Frank Stockley slightly sours the result. Stockley limped off with a hamstring injury in the first quarter and played no further part in the game.

GAME CHANGERS

HAMPSON ALMIGHTY:
Versatile Subiaco youngster George Hampson has been gathering a lot of attention in 2014 and proved the hype was real against Perth. Hampson was amongst everything to collect 25 touches in an intriguing battle against Perth’s Clem Smith. There’s no doubt the Scarborough youngster got the last laugh with a classy goal in the pocket and a 73 point win to reflect on.

DIZZY MAHONEY
Midfielder Brett Mahoney was involved in his second high contact charge of the season, this time coming from Perth captain Paul Bevan. Mahoney was infamously involved in a clash with Fremantle Docker Colin Sylvia in Round Four that also ended in a concussion. Bevan received a bronx cheer from the Subiaco faithful over the remainder of the match and could be looking at a lengthy time on the sideline.

CLINICAL KICKING
Subiaco have been building over the last month but their goal kicking has been questioned. The Lions put all doubt of accuracy behind them against the Perth Demons with their highest accuracy rating of the season. With 27 of their 36 scoring shots resulting in goals; the rest of the WAFL will be fearing a switched on Subiaco outfit for the rest of the season.

QBE MAN OF THE MATCH
Subiaco celebrated their 30th year of partnership with QBE Insurance and forward Shane Yarran was excited to come to the party. Yarran booted his highest tally as a Lions to finish with six goals and claim our QBE Man Of The Match. Congratulations to Kristy Ninyette who correctly guessed the winner.
