Colts fire past Sharks

The Subiaco Colts have pulled of a crucial 44-point win over East Fremantle at Medibank Stadium to remain in the top four.

A massive second half comeback saw the Lions lift above the challenging Sharks kicking 13 goals to East Fremantle’s one in the second stanza.

Young utility Ryan Vermeersch played his best game of the year with four goals and ten disposals whilst the returning Aaron Summers was also impressive with three goals and 20 disposals.

Kalgoorlie prospect Ryan Borchet also had his best game in the maroon and gold collecting 15 disposals and kicking two goals in a best on ground display.

Excitement has developed around Borchet who is renowned for having strong hands and a steady kick for his hometown club of Railways.

The win comes as a timely boost for the Subiaco Colts who were in the midst of a four game free-fall.

Subiaco’s results have been inconsistent due to injuries, senior and state 18’s call-ups but with the business end of the season nearing the Lions the strongest squad is taking shape.

Greg Clark, Max Walters and Aaron Summers all returned to the side this week after challenging Victoria Country in the WA State 18’s side last weekend.

GAME CHANGERS

 BORCHET BUILDS:
The 17 year old from Kalgoorlie played his third game for the Lions against East Fremantle and showed the form that he was recruited for. Borchet is an athletic forward who has great hands and an intelligent kick. Although struggling to get into his first two games of Colts football, Borchet appears to be acclimatising to the standard required.

MIDFIELD REGAINS STRENGTH:
Although players like Joshua Hatch, Connor Wilkinson and Tim Edwards have been doing a magnificent job at filling the gaps left by our competing State 18’s representatives there’s no doubt coach Steve Armstrong loved to have them back against the Sharks. The return of Greg Clark, Max Walters and Aaron Summers to the midfield was a huge boost to the Lions and helped the home side gain ascendency in the second half. The three young guns combined for 65 touches and 17 inside 50’s.

FOUR QUARTERS:
Consistency continues to avoid the Subiaco Colts in 2014 with another slow start almost sending the Lions to a fifth straight loss. Despite an extremely slow first half the Lions came to life in the second with their best third quarter of the season.
