LIONS READY TO RUMBLE
After a massive pre-season campaign the Lions are champing at the bit to take on South Fremantle at Medibank Stadium at 4:05pm on Saturday
Vice Captain Darren Rumble will lead the team out and says he’s had this weekend marked in his calendar since November.
“You go through a few different feelings before the first game each year, a bit of nerves, excitement and optimism all rolled into one.” Rumble said.
“We’re coming off a pretty ordinary year last year, so for us we’re desperate to make up for that and it starts against Souths.”
Rumble says he’s expecting the Lions to deliver a quicker brand of football and fans will get their first look at a lot of new faces.
Like South Fremantle the Lions managed just 6 wins last season but new additions Wayde Twomey, Shaun Hildebrandt, Frank Stockley, Lachlan Delahunty, Matt Boland, Shane Yarran and Reece Blechynden are all in line to bolster the senior side.
The Bulldogs remain an unknown quantity ahead of season 2014 and Rumble says they are always capable of posting big scores.
“Souths are generally known for their scoring ability so we have to prepare to be a little more defensively minded all over the ground.” He said.
SAUNDERS TO FIRE
Paul Hasleby has full confidence in the ability of his players in particular Ben Saunders. The South’s coach has backed the full forward to return to his Bernie Naylor best of 2012 and says he’s capable of playing AFL.
X MARKS THE FOOTY
Recruit Shane Yarran has already built a cult following in just two pre-season games. The silky forward has plenty of the X factor that brings fans to games and is one of the early favourites to drag down Mark of the Year.
Souths veteran Kris Miller is edging closer to the rare 300 games milestone.
Saturday’s clash with the Lions will be his 299th.
The 33-year-old is only five games away from automatic life membership (150 games) at Souths.
He’s set to become the first WAFL player to attain life membership at two clubs (154 games at East Fremantle)
