Phelan Fine

Subiaco defender turned midfield dynamo Chris Phelan says the club has plenty more to gain out of season 2013.

The 25-year-old has been enjoying a cameo in the Lions midfield averaging 21 disposals in his past three outings.

“It’s good to get off the chain a little bit and be able to find my own footy.” The Kingsley product said.

“Scoey just said to me that he wanted to make the most of my foot skills, so hitting as many targets and getting the ball into dangerous areas.”

Subiaco play East Perth twice in their final three games.

With the likes of Adam Selwood, Matt Rosa and Cale Morton, The Royals boast one of the WAFL’s most credentialed midfields.

“They have a lot of experience in their engine room, a lot of hard, good inside players. I haven’t been told what my exact role will be on Saturday but either way we are all looking forward to meeting them head on.” Phelan said.

“It’s always good to ruin East Perth’s hopes for the finals, them being our co-tenants, but the main thing we want to get out of the season is that we have a lot of young guys playing well so it should hold us in good stead for next season.”

Stars Align

East Perth has reaped the full benefits of the WAFL’s new alignment model in recent weeks. Key West Coast Eagles listed players Adam Selwood, Matt Rosa and Cale Morton have all added class and experience to the Royals running brigade.

Call Him Bernie

Royals’ spearhead Josh Smith is set to take home the 2013 Bernie Naylor medal as the league’s most prolific goal kicker.

The burly forward has kicked 52 goals and is five goals clear of Perth’s Paul Bevan with just four games remaining.

Ruck off

The contest between two of the competition’s premier ruckmen will go a long way to deciding Saturday’s result.

For the first time this season Lion Andrew McDougall and Royal Paul Johnson will go head to head at giving their midfielders first use of the football.
