“Every game from here is an elimination final for us.”- Jeff Lind
These words from Player Development Officer Jeff Lind frame the remainder of the Colts season in the perfect light; with this weeks’ clash against the Royals a must-win.
The Lions sit precariously at fourth place; narrowly above East Fremantle on percentage; with four losses in a row seeing the Colts nosediving down the ladder.
However; the Lions are far from out of the flag race with a squad full of talent and three games to gather some momentum; starting with the East Perth Royals at Medibank Stadium.
The Lions gave the second placed Bulldogs a run for their money last week by generating more scoring opportunities in the first half; but settled with a return rate of 2.8. Inaccurate kicking left the Lions to chase the Bulldogs all day; a position which South Fremantle comfortably held. After being one of the best converters in 2013; Coach Steve Armstrong will be looking to rectify his sides Round 20 kicking woes.
UNLEASH THE BEAST
After suffering two injury setbacks in 2013; defender James Hughes will make his return to the Colts side against East Perth. The senior defender will be fired up and raring to go against the Royals after spending most of the year on the sideline.
The return of leader Hayden Kennedy is monumental in Subiaco’s finals push. The hardnosed midfielder puts a massive amount of power back into the Lions engine room as they look to ripen towards the business end of the season. Kennedy will be important against East Perth’s quick spread through the midfield.
ROYAL PAIN IN THE SIDE
Although they’ve only won five games this year; East Perth are no easy-beats. The young Royals have been super competitive all year and pushed the top tier sides until the end. The Lions will have to watch out for a couple of players; especially Busselton native Blake Riley who has been a standout for the Royals in the midfield all year, averaging 17 disposals a game.
