From Cub to Lion King

Head coach Jarrad Schofield says he’s excited about what the future holds for the Subiaco Lions after signing a contract extension that will see him in the top job until at least the end of 2015.

It strengthens Schofield’s ties to the club at which his decorated football career began more than two decades ago.

“It’s a cycle that’s gone a full ‘360’. I started my footy career here as a 12-year-old playing development squads when Jeff Lind (Player Development Officer) was my first coach and now I’m working along side him.” Schofield said.

Schofield made his senior debut for Subiaco as a teenager before being drafted by West Coast with pick 49 in the 1992 draft. His 206 game AFL career spanned three clubs and included a premiership at Port Adelaide in 2004. Schofield returned to the WAFL and helped Subiaco to three premierships (2006, 2007, 2008).

“To be able to coach a footy club where it all started is a huge thing for me, I’m very passionate about making sure the club has long term sustainability, I’m not just looking for quick fixes.” Schofield said

Subiaco CEO Peter Capes said the club jumped at the opportunity to extend Schofield’s contract for a further two seasons.

“He provides the club and the players with certainty regarding our future pathway,” Capes said.

“Jarrad has demonstrated a highly organized and dedicated approach to the senior coach’s role which goes a long way to providing an environment where all our players can excel.”

“Not only that, he’s been able to attract a quality group of assistants that will be able to get the best out of our young group.” Capes said.
