Hicks Ticks the Boxes
The Subiaco Football Club has great pleasure in announcing that Adrian Hicks, who has been involved with football in the Goldfields for over two decades, will oversee the Lions Goldfields Talent Academy.
Hick’s first task will be to formulate a development squad of 14 and 15 year olds, and prepare them for the WAFL carnival that will be played in Perth in the October school holidays.
The aims of the Talent Academy is to provide country players the opportunity to achieve their potential and to provide specialised training that is an advancement to their club football.
It is clearly acknowledged that country boys do not get the same opportunities as boys in the metropolitan area. Hicks is passionate about nurturing local talent and is determined to see Goldfields boys increase their opportunities by improving their football skills and enhance their knowledge and education. Hicks will focus on creating an environment that focuses on individual player development. The Academy will replicate the metropolitan talent programs that SFC delivers
Hicks said, “it is every players’ dream to be drafted to the AFL, but it is important the players understand the pathway through the WAFL system and the enormous amount of work they have to do first. It is equally important that those players who choose to continue their football in the Goldfield become they best they can at that level, which can only be good for local football”.
Hicks added, “essentially the talent program aims to fast track that development and provide greater opportunities for Goldfields boys”.
Subiaco’s Player Development Officer Jeff Lind is excited about the appointment. Lind said, “having a person of Adrian Hicks’ credentials available to guide the boys is a bonus. Adrian has been involved with developing young players in the Goldfields for many years, particularly with the Kalgoorlie City Football Club. We are very fortunate that he has agreed to come on board. The Goldfields boys will benefit enormously from his involvement”.
Adrian Hicks is a born and bred Goldfields boy, having been involved with football for some 26 years. His list of football achievements are impressive:
- Almost 150 games with Kangas in GFL
- Dual Premiership Player Kangas League - 1992 and 1999
- Runner-up Fairest and Best with Kangas (League) - 1994
- Premiership player with Wanneroo WAAFL League – 1995 - Best Player in Grand Final
- Three times Goldfields (Kangas) Reserves Premierships 1997, 1998 and 2002
- Representative Player for Goldfields in sub-junior, colts and senior grades
- Kalgoorlie City Colts Coach - 2011 and 2012
Hicks is no stranger to the talent identification process, having been a final 50 participant in the selection of the 1992 Teal Cup team for WA. In more recent times he has provided a mentoring role for his nephew Dom Sheed, who is currently part of the 2013 WA State 18s team competing in the national carnival.
Adrian Hicks is now giving back to the game that his provided him with many opportunities and his experience will be a great benefit for football and talent development in the Goldfields.
