Two Subi Colts made their senior debuts on the weekend with Michael Wood making his league debut and Declan Jackson playing in his first senior game with the reserves.
Jackson has had a dominant start to 2013 captaining the Lions Colts, which was rewarded with his first senior call up playing reserves against the Demons on Saturday.
Michael Wood was the more unlikely story however, receiving a call last Thursday night to inform him that he had been selected to represent Subiaco’s league team.
“The selection came as a bit of a surprise. I got a text on Monday morning to say I would be training with the seniors for the next three weeks, but I thought it was to just build up a bit of experience. I didn’t expect to get the call up to play in the league side straight away.”
Wood didn’t look out of place either, kicking two goals and applying frenetic forward line pressure but the rising forward noted gargantuan differences between Colts and League football.
“The speed of the game and the size of the players were very different. The defenders close in on the ball really fast so you’ve got to react quickly and use your instincts
“Once I was in the game I kind of felt in my element. You settle down and do what you can in the situations you’re put in. You kind of forget you’re playing league football.”
With his first league game under the belt and a red hot start to the 2013 season, Wood is happy with his form, but knows there’s room to grow.
“I’m happy with my footy so far this year, but there’s always room for improvement. I’m hoping to play as many league games as possible whilst playing to the best of my abilities.”
The Subiaco Lions travel to Swan Districts this week as both 18 year olds Michael Wood and Declan Jackson will be in the mix for a second senior selection.
