The Colts have gotten their season off to the perfect start with wins against West Perth and East Perth.
They weren’t just minor wins however, blowing away the opposition by a total of 157 points, scoring 35 goals.
Michael Wood, Rhys McAlister, Cody Grace and Ryan Vermeesch have all been major players in the forward line for the Lions, but the star has been Wood, who stands atop the WAFL goal-kicking with 13.3.
Coach Steven Armstrong says it has all come down to Michael Wood’s work ethic and willingness to better himself as a player
“Woody has progressed really nicely. Last year we played him in a full-forward role and he was dropping a few marks and skewing a few kicks but he’s really come into his element this year. His work ethic over the summer has been really impressive. He’s done all the hard work that a big forward should do and it’s shown with his start.”
With a kicking accuracy rating of 81.25%, Michael Wood is one of the leagues sharpest shooters, something that has been helped by finding routine according to Armstrong.
“Wood always been a good kick but he’s solidified his action under coaching by Ross Jevons and Murray Couper. He has a routine now which helps him stay consistent.”
Michael Wood and co will have to be at their goal-kicking best over the next stretch, as Subiaco faces Colts powerhouses East Fremantle, Claremont and South Fremantle in succession.
“The games will prove where we are at in a way as these three sides have always had strong outfits, but Colts football is a funny thing, it all comes down to what happens on the day.” Said Armstrong
“From a team perspective it’s a good challenge to play three teams which made the finals last year and see how we match up.”
One things for sure though, he’s confident his undefeated Lions have the potential to achieve.
“I’m confident in what this side has done over pre-season and so far in the season. Most of our young guys have now had a year and a half in the system and are really starting to lift their game so I’m confident in our abilities as a side. “
