Steve Armstrong and Greg Rogers speaking to the Karlgoorlie City Football Club
Subi's Player Development Officer Jeff Lind, and Colts Coach, Steve Armstrong, were treated to a weekend of football in many forms this week, visiting the Goldfields to attend the annual Nickel West Cup carnival.
Fresh from a convincing first up win by the Colts on Friday night Jeff & Steve were on the plane at the crack of dawn on Saturday to watch 12 Clontarf teams compete in the carnival which has been running since 2004.
Subiaco’s country zones had three teams competing, the Goldfields Marlus & Pangaras, and the Esperance Stingrays; and as you would expect there was some exciting talent playing. Steve Armstrong assisted by passing on some coaching tips to the players.
Added to the Goldfields Clontarf Academy team were 9 players from Subiaco’s talent development program. This was a great opportunity to not only watch these talented boys play but also to meet the parents of the boys involved.
After watching 6 games of football Steve Armstrong then took local senior team Kangas for a training session. The boys performed very well considering the high temperature.
That night Jeff and Steve were guests of the Kalgoorlie City FC (Kangas) season launch and announcement of their league squad. The evening took on the format of “Bounce of the Ball” to signify the kick-off of the 2013 season. Coach Colin Rule introduced each player, who was presented with a club polo shirt.
Steve Armstrong was the guest speaker for the function. Steve participated in a question and answer session with club stalwart Greg “Cobb” Rogers. Cobber certainly did his homework as he interwove questions about Steve’s grandfather, Ken, father Gary, and then his own career. Cobber asked questions about Steve’s rise to AFL football which was culminated with the 2006 West Coast Eagles premiership and his move to the coaching world. Steve and Cobber worked in perfect harmony together and they entertained the crowd.
Subiaco continues to build its strong relationship with the Goldfields. The current Colts group has three Goldfields players who are members of the leadership group – Hayden Kennedy, Mitch Turner and Cody Grace. Add to this Liam Ellis and we hear Tom Flematti originated from the Goldfields.
