SUBIACO have had any faint final hopes they still had ended after a 20-point defeat to South Fremantle.

A lacklustre Subiaco trailed at every break to go down 14.17 (101) to 12.9 (81).

The Bulldogs inaccuracy kept the Lions in the contest up until half time as they only managed seven goals from their 17 scoring shots.

A dominant third quarter display from the Bulldogs set up the win, a fast finishing Subiaco flattered by the final score.

Tall forward Ben Saunders kicked seven goals and proved a lethal combination with livewire small forward Jayden Woods who had two.  Hayden Schloithe also bagged a couple of majors.

Blake Broadhurst and Callum Sinclair were the Lions main targets up forward with two goals a piece, small forwards Chris Deluca and Alliston Pickett also had two.

Inside midfielder Jason Bristow worked tirelessly at the bottom of the packs to amass 36 possessions while Aidan Parker again led from the front with 25.

Rowen McDonnell continued his good form of late to gather 23 touches.

QUARTER BY QUARTER

First quarter:

South Fremantle made the most of the early running they held when Alex Grima snapped the first goal of the afternoon. Blake Broadhurst kicked Subiaco’s first as they begun to arrest back some of the momentum. It would prove short lived as the Bulldogs began to take a stranglehold on the game. Their quarter time lead would have been greater had inaccuracy not plagued them. A set shot on the siren hitting the post.

Second quarter:

South Fremantle established a grip on the game when they started with the first couple of goals of the second quarter. The Lions fought back with a couple of their own. The Bulldogs shot themselves in the foot again with their inaccuracy, which meant further late goals from Deluca and Broadhurst would bring Subiaco back into the contest.

Third quarter:

The third quarter started positively for the Lions when they scored from the opening centre bounce. However, South Fremantle responded to again control the momentum and dominate the majority of the quarter. Two late Subiaco goals made them an outside chance of a fourth quarter comeback.

Fourth quarter:

Subiaco’s two goals to start the fourth term gave them hope of a late revival. Despite playing the majority of the fourth quarter in their 50 time would prove their greatest foe and when South Fremantle kicked their first goal of the fourth quarter the contest was ended. A late consolation prize from Deluca counted for little.

Deluca Delight

Chris Deluca gathered the ball on centre wing and took four bounces in running to 25 metres out before having a set shot from an acute angle only to hit the post. It would have been one of the Lions goals of the season had he been able to finish.

Leading from the front

Aidan Parker did as he has all season long and led from the front with his 25 touches but proved a lone hand down back.

Bristow’s best

Jason Bristow was far and way Subiaco’s best on ground with 36 possessions, seven marks and eight inside 50s. The midfielder worked tirelessly for Subiaco all day.

IN THE RESERVES:

Subiaco made it three straight wins with a 68-point thumping of cellar dwellers South Fremantle.

The Lions set up the win with a dominant ten goal to one first half as full forward Nick Hay bagged four goals.

Subiaco’s midfield production important in the win, Rory Muller had 30 possessions while Joel Ashman (28) and Matt Bogensperger (27) were busy.

Tim Whyte and Michael Genovese continued recent good form with 25 and 23 possessions respectively.

Colts graduate James Garcia booted two goals along with Scott Ward.

The Lions remain an outside chance to play in finals but need to win all remaining fixtures to keep their season alive.
