SUBIACO’s 70-point loss to Perth on Saturday brought with it few positives but one of those was the performance League debutant Daniel Leishman.

The son of former 48-game Subiaco player Steven Leishman has made a rapid rise from amateur football at the start of the season to a league debut for Subiaco.

“It’s been tough I guess coming down here and training, the training load is a lot more than what you would do at an amateur club too just in term of the nights and what you have to do when you are away from the club,” Leishman said.

“In that respect it’s been very tough and the standard of football is higher as well in terms of physical pressure and getting up for the next week.

“I’m just glad to get an opportunity.”

After spending the start of the season with North Beach in the amateurs, Leishman played just five reserves matches between rounds 6 and 10 before his 15-possession League debut, which included eight kicks, seven handpasses, and four marks.

“Obviously it was a tough day for the club pretty bad to get beaten by Perth we would have liked to get up for a win so in that respect it’s very tough,” he said of his debut game.

“For myself it was good to get up and have a crack at League footy, obviously the pace was fast and it was good learning experience.

“I was just glad to get my hands on the ball and not be nervous the boys looked after me out there and go me a couple of easy kicks, easy handballs.

“There were a lot of guys out there who would have had a lot more of an influence on the game than I would have but it was good to just the hands on it and calm the nerves kind of thing.”

A back pocket just like his dad Steven, Leishman senior’s 48 games came across three season in the mid 80s.

But Daniel doesn’t remember much about watching his day play.

“I’ve seen a couple of photos and a couple of videos on you tube that he sends me from time to time.”

“He talks it up like he was pretty tough, I don’t know if he was, I reckon he was pretty soft actually but he talks it up like he was tough.”

“I’ve got him covered in the height stakes, I don’t know too much about him. He was a back pocket as well so I think he reckons he was pretty quick but I don’t know he’s played a lot more games than me at this stage so we’ll just take it week to week and see how I go.”
