The Colts Future is Promising

Colts ruckman David Madut leaps high above his opposing number in the colts rd 3 clash against South Fremantle.

On the strength of results alone you would be justified in querying why we would promote that the future of the Colts as being promising. Let’s put all this into perspective – of the 23 that took the field against Perth only 8 had played Colts in 2011 and only three (3) of those played more than 6 games. The Colts group from 2011 was very mature and most have either moved up to the seniors or are now playing amateurs.  What we are left with in 2012 is a group of very inexperienced players.

The results of games this year have been encouraging considering the task in front of Steve Armstrong and his assistants.  You simply can not throw together 15 first year players, plus another 5 who played less than 6 Colts games in 2011 and expect they will be able to sustain 4 quarters of high intensity football.  But what are getting is improvement every week and the coaches are excited about how this group will develop as they gain that valuable experience.  To add to our woes players who performed strongly in last week’s game, Kyle Halligan, Cameron Wohling and Cameron Smith, were all out injured.

The 2012 season losses have been as follows:

Round 1 by 4 pts in a game day was close all day

Round 2 by 23 points after  leading all game up until the 10 minute mark of the last quarter

Round 3 was a big loss to South Fremantle despite being in the game at half time and having more scoring  shots.

Round 5 by 9 points in another close encounter

Round 6 by 2 points after leading all game.

While the boys are bitterly disappointed not to have recorded a victory, the purpose of Colts football is development and on that note we have some exciting players coming through.  Players who have performed to a high standard in 2012 are Bill Feterstonhaugh, Dom Sheed, Kyle Halligan, Mitch Harvie, Charlie LeFanu, Michael Wood, Cameron Smith, Alex Sheed, Kobie Somers, Cam Wohling, Dylan Clarke, Matt Turner, Declan Jackson, James Garcia, Chris Deluca, Andrew Vawser, David Madut and Jordan Bestry.

We do have the nucleus of a good team, we just need to be patient while they learn what Steve is teaching them.  Each week a new gem is unearthed and over the past two weeks 17 year olds Jordan Webster, Mitch Turner Peter, Harvey and Bryce Denysiuk got their opportunity.  It will not be long before the consistency comes and the boys will be rewarded.
