Rd 22 v East Perth - Colts Coach's Report

E-mail Print PDF

Saturday morning the Subiaco colts pulled off an unbelievable win over East Perth. After matching it with East Fremantle in the second half last week they showed themselves  & the supporters they can play an exciting brand of football & that brand was showcased on Saturday as they ran out winners by scoring a 138-point victory at Medibank Stadium.  The colts piled on an amazing 27 goals in the final 3 quarters to win 29.14 (188) to 7.8 (50).
Chris Deluca finished with 6 goals 5 & 28 possessions. Rhys Waters also finished the game with 6 goals & 24 possessions while Nick Hay chipped in with 5 goals after being moved forward after quarter time. East Perth got the jump early in the first quarter kicking the first 2 goals. We kicked two late goals to level the scores at quarter time. The second started with a bang as we started to dominate through the midfield. Chris Deluca had a purple patch & was on fire in the second quarter kicking 4 goals. Jones, Waters & Hay all kicked 2 each for the term as we opened the flood gates kicking 12 goals as we extended our lead to 74 points at Half Time. An amazing quarter of football, with our pressure up forward a highlight. We also had 14 to 3 inside 50’s showing our dominance through the middle.
The third quarter started in the same fashion as we continued to play an exciting brand of football. Our run and carry from defence was great & our midfield used the ball well setting up some great passages of play. We extended our lead to 92 points heading into the main break.
Being on the receiving end of a few thrashings this year the boys defiantly didn’t want to take their foot of the pedal as the piled on another 9 goals in the last quarter to run out 138 point winners. A great team effort and one the boys should be very proud of their performance.

James Garcia (20 possessions) was fantastic all day along with Justin Joyce (22 Possessions) & Christian Bottechia (21 possessions) off Half Back. Only having won three games before this round, the boys have been doing it pretty tough this year and was great to see them put a game like that together. They deserved the win & gives them confidence going into the final game of the year against South Fremantle next week.

Life Membership Dream Comes True

By Chris Pike

BEN Keevers grew up supporting Subiaco, selling programs and running the scoreboard as he dreamed of a career that sees him earn life membership this Saturday against East Perth on top of his three premierships and three appearances for Western Australia. Keevers has been a star with Subiaco over his first 149 games since debuting back in 2000 after coming right through the development ranks and colts after supporting the Lions growing up. By 2003, he had cemented himself in the team and as one of the very best creative defenders in the league over the last decade that has seen him be a regular of Subiaco's successful teams and of WA line-ups.

The 27-year-old could only dream of playing for Subiaco when supporting the club growing up, but now to look back on everything he has achieved he still has to sometimes pinch himself. "I grew up with a Lions jumper on as a kid, I sold programs at the footy when I was 11 or 12 and my first job at Subi was as the scoreboard attendant for the colts when I'd try to pinch footies out the back. I'm just so proud to be able to be a one-club player with the team I grew up following," Keevers said.

League Coach's Report - Rd 21 v East Fremantle

Another disappointing loss on the weekend has now put us in  a position the club hasn’t been in for quite a while. We will have to win both games and hope for mistakes from others which is not the ideal situation to be in. But right now we are just going to focus on East Perth which will be the biggest game for the year given both clubs are in the same boat and we are rival tenants at Medibank. We look like gaining the services of Adam Cockie for the game but he hasn’t played for 9 weeks and we can’t expect a lot from him as was the same for Des Headland who is getting better each week.

It will be a tough game of football this weekend as the players know we have put ourselves in this position and they want to finish the season strongly. The effort was certainly there last week but we have lost confidence infront of goals and if you can’t score you can’t win so we will fight harder for a win this weekend as it’s our last game at Medibank and we would love to give the loyal supporters something to smile about. Two great players will achieve milestones this week in Keevo (150) and broady (100).  Congratulations and all the best to both of them - see you there on Saturday.

Hyph & Greggy Catch Up

It may not have been the ideal situation to be exchanging pleasantries with an old mate but when the siren sounded to end the Fremantle v Sydney game on the weekend two former Subiaco team-mates took the opportunity to say g’day. Greg Broughton had just put in a BOG effort in the Fremantle’s narrow loss to Sydney.  Trent Dennis-lane was ecstatic to be art of a winning team and he was a solid contributor with 2 goals, one being a contender for goal of the day. We wish both Greggy and Hyph all the best with their AFL careers.

Reserves Coach's Report rd 21 v East Fremantle

This week we played East Fremantle who is one off the better sides in the reserves this year. Before the game the player seemed to be switched on and I thought we were in for a good start. The first quarter was very disappointing we were out played in every aspect and we allowed East Fremantle to do as they pleased and we went into quarter time 7 goals down.
After quarter time we outscored them 10 goals 8 points to 10 goals 4 points which was very pleasing and a good reward for the players after quarter time who’s pressure and their willingness to work together as a team were very good. What let us down was some off our poor skills and decision making at times and East Fremantle were able to get easy goals and we couldn’t reduce the 7 goal margin.
S Martin was our major goal scorer for the day with 4 goals and Benny Heff – Roper chipped in with 3 goals. Our better players for the day were B. Heff-Roper, D Tincknell, B Stevenson and R Forrest. Thanks again for your support and hope to see you all this week when we take on East Perth.
