Premiership star Cossom reaches 200 games

Subiaco's star premiership wingman Chad Cossom reaches a rare feat in modern day WAFL football when he plays his 200th match this Saturday and it's an achievement that highlights his quality that has now lasted more than a decade.

Cossom made his debut in 2000 under Kevan Sparks having come through the colts and found his niche as one of the hardest running and most dynamic wingmen in the competition in 2003 when Peter German arrived at the Lions as coach.

He has been out on the wing ever since tearing up opposition sides with his trademark runs of several bounces that often end in one of his 138 career goals.

That has been a highlight of Subiaco matches for much of the last decade and the 28-year-old has been a key contributor to the club's most successful era.

This week we came up against undefeated East Fremantle side who have been the benchmark this season in the colts competition. This was always going to be a tough and exciting challenge for our young side to test themselves against the best side in the competition.

A fast start & scoreboard pressure was the key in putting East Fremantle on the back foot. The first quarter saw us dominate the first 20 minutes of the game, unfortunatly we were unable to put scoreboard pressure and missed some easy shots in front of goals. East Freamantle kicked two goals near quarter time to be up by 2 goals. After quarter time it was all East Fremantle as they kicked away to end up winning by a big margin.

A really dissapointing result. Our boys learnt alot playing against quality opposition like East Freamantle and will keep working hard on our deficiencies.

We look to next week now & put this game behind us. This week we travel down to Peel & the boys will be giving it their all for the footy club.

A terrific win on the weekend from the senior boys which has helped us maintain a top four spot but we are a long way from the end and we must strive to improve.

Kyal Horsley, Rory Muller and Shaun Hildebrandt were outstanding in the midfield while Marc Webb’s return to the team was also very good. Blake Broadhurst is in real good form and his five goals were all quality and Marty Smith chipped in for a couple of goals also. The backline are working well together and holding teams up very well. Our injured players are starting to filter back and we hope to see Des Headland and a few others starting to play over the next two weeks.

A big few weeks before our next bye which could sort out who will play finals or not and the players are well aware of what’s at stake. Look forward to seeing you all at our next home game or this weekend in Mandurah.

Very lucky are the two words that expressed my feelings after the weekends game but we were also satisfied to get four points after losing a winnable match the week before.
Perth were playing the better football for most of the match but to our credit the boys kept having a go and if you just did that every week then you are a chance to win.
Unfortunately the sad story was that Greg Broughton broke down with a hammy strain and we hope to see him back playing in the next 2/3 weeks.  Greg had missed the previous month with injury so it was a blow for him and Fremantle but we wish him a speedy recovery.
Keevers, Horsley and Hildabrandt all worked hard during the game and Blake Broadhurst kicked 4 very good goals while Rory Muller chipped in with 3 goals of his own.

We are hopeful that Marc Webb will get through training this week and play seniors, as he is a terrific leader for us out there.  We are waiting on the fitness of Des Headland as he may play his first game in 8 weeks if he is passed fit.
All in all a win is a win and we look forward to another big challenge against East Fremantle this weekend at home.

CHAD COSSOM & AIDAN PARKER 200 Games

Since the inception of the AFL it has been a rarity for WAFL players to achieve 200 games.  At Subiaco the last person to play 200 was Brian Taylor on 25th August 1990.  Four game s earlier that season Clinton Brown also played his 200th game.
In the next 20 years the best tallies of Subiaco games have been achieved by Andrew Macnish (196), Dwayne Lamb (191), Damian Hampson (169) and Nathan O’Connor (167).
Chad Cossom’s career has been even more remarkable as he been fortunate to play in what is now known as the “Glory Years”.  A product from Kingsley he started with the Colts in 1998 and has played finals football in consecutive years up to 2009.
Starting his league career in 2000, he endured the experience of playing in three losing preliminary finals and then a losing grand final appearance in 2003, but he has since followed this up with four league premierships under his belt.  Chad Cossom has played the one State game and added to his 199 WAFL games he will celebrate his 200th WAFL game this Saturday when Subiaco plays at home against East Fremantle.
Aidan Parker is another player nudging his way towards his 200th SFC appearance.  Two weeks ago Aidan played his 200th state league game, including 158 games with Subiaco, 26 with South Adelaide, 12 with Glenelg and 4 State games.
Aidan was recruited from Carine JFC, he is a triple premiership player and he has had the honour of captaining Subiaco for the past two years.
This weekend will also have the special significance of being the beginning of NAIDOC week celebrations.
