League Coach's Report Rd18 v South Fremantle

E-mail Print PDF

The weekends performance was much better than the previous week but we failed to get the result we wanted.  We now face a tough challenge for the remainder of the season to play finals.  We have Claremont in two weeks and fortunately we will have a healthier list to pick from and we will go into the game with confidence.
Buddy Pickett didn't have the impact we were looking for but he showed signs he is going to be a good player in the future.  The news on Adam Cockie and Des Headland is that they will be 50/50 for the next game but some other players got some more game time in the reserves which was important.  Scott Worthington played his first game in 6 weeks and looked good while Abe Davey will press for selection.  A big challenge ahead but one we will not shy away from.  Looking forward to seeing all our diehard supporters at our next game.

Allistair Pickett's Amazing Career

Another magic achievement in amazing career - By Chris Pike

REACHING 150 games with Subiaco, representing the club in NAIDOC Week and now making history by playing with his son has made Allistair Pickett glad he returned in 2010 for a farewell WAFL season.

Pickett, who turns 37 next month, initially retired ahead of last year's grand final loss to South Fremantle, but felt he had plenty of football left in him and achievements left that he wanted to cross off that meant he felt he should return in 2010.

His form has suggested he made the right decision as he's kicked 22 goals in 13 games this season and had a big impact in several matches, but there's no question by the end of this season the Lions' champion will feel he has done everything possible in his stellar career.

That already included four premierships, two Sandover Medals, a fairest and best award, three state jumpers, being named in Subiaco's Team of the Century and a reputation as the best modern day WAFL footballer.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING - FATHER / SON TO PLAY FOR SUBIACO THIS SATURDAY

It is something that we have romanced about all season, the thought of the evergreen Allistair Pickett and his son Alliston creating history by being the first father son combination to play league football together at WAFL level.  Well it’s going to happen this Saturday when Subiaco takes on South Fremantle in the Charlie Tyson “Big Boots” clash at Medibank Stadium.
This is likely to be the first time that a father and son have been selected to play at state league level anywhere in Australia.
After contemplating retirement at the end of 2009 Alistair, who will turn 37 later this year, is the oldest player in the 2010 WAFL competition.  Alliston, aka “Buddy”, is aged 17 and has steadily progressed through the Colts and Reserves in season  2010.
Subiaco Coach Chris Waterman said “our performances in recent weeks have highlighted the need for a crumbing forward and Buddy has shown that he has the attributes to succeed in that role.  Buddy started with the Colts this year and while we flirted with this scenario some weeks back it was decided to groom Buddy through the Reserves.  I understand that that the football pundits will have an opinion on this but the simple fact is we need a player to fulfill this role”.
Waterman went on to say, “you are never sure when it’s the right time to bring up a young player.  Buddy is unfazed by the challenge of playing league football and as you would expect he is excited about the opportunity to play alongside his father”.
This will be a special day for father Alilistair, who said “this is a dream come true and to be honest it is something that motivated me to play on this year.  This day will be something special to both of us, but when we cross the white line he will no longer be my little boy and it is important that we both do our job for the team”.

Blake broadhurst - 7 goalsThe weekends game was probably the most disappointing effort for the year.  We had a lot to play for and were extremely poor for the entire day.  The players and coaches have addressed it at training and we understand that it was not acceptable and we won’t stand for it again.  We now find ourselves in a play off situation for the rest of the year and that presents a great challenge for the playing group.  Unfortunately there is not much joy with our injury list, Ben Randall should come back into the team, Jake Wooden and Andrew Scott played reserves after a few weeks out while Josh Watson also completed his first reserves match for 2 months.  Adam Cockie is still scheduled for after the bye round along with Phil Read, Jason Bristow, Rob Forrest and Mark Re.  Aside from our own injury list we are not sure about Antoni Grover and Des Headland as yet this week with regard to playing with us so we will wait and see.  We are now facing teams who are chasing a spot in the four and South are one of them, this week will be a big game for both clubs and we hope to see all the Subiaco faithful on Saturday at Medibank Stadium.
